Last Summer is a short animated film from GOBELINS School of Visual Arts 2022 Graduation Film.

This project was to see how could I take a short story and make my own title sequence for it? I wanted to take this short animated film that captivated my heart and attempt to create an opening that captured the same energy and conveyed the same emotions in my own way. Here is how I built my title sequence and what my motion design process looked like.

Last Summer is a story about Ren and his childhood friends spending their last summer together. As they spend those last days of vacation writing their final song and hanging out in the countryside, Ren faces the difficulties of having to let go of his lifelong relationships. As summer ends, Ren’s bandmates and childhood friends are leaving for college. He struggles to write the lyrics of their final song.

The overall feel of the motion graphic was supposed to play with old vhs 90s film aesthetics. The fragmented and handmade quality of the cutouts added a unique visual charm, aligning seamlessly with the theme of reminiscence and the passage of time inherent in the title "Last Summer." Bebas Neue also matches the typical film credits I was inspired from.

Blurring and adding a drop shadow on the ransom letters added a tactile and nostalgic aesthetic, evoking a sense of bygone eras captured in print.

After hearing the song from the short film I knew that this had to be part of the opening title sequence.
